The National, Monday February 8th, 2016
POLICE seized 55 cartons of mustard (daka) at the Motukea wharf in Port Moresby last Saturday.
Water police Sergeant John Vaki said the cartons had been brought in from Lae and were among vegetables in a container off-loaded from a local vessel.
Vaki said PNG Ports security Kuima Security guards and officers from the Water police worked together on the case.
“The guards became suspicious when a speeding vehicle, which came out of the shipping yard, nearly hit one of the PNG Ports vehicles,” he said.
“We (later) checked the container and found the cartons of mustards.”
Vaki said 19 cartons had been taken out of the yard before they arrived. Of the 55 confiscated, 28 were brought to the NCDC Tapot depot.
The rest were supposed to be brought in by police officers travelling in an unmarked car, who offered help to transport the mustard to Tapot.
NCD Urban Safety Director Paul Komboi said this was the second biggest shipment of mustard freighted to Port Moresby.
They first arrived by air from Kokoda.
