Cops shoot dead man, arrest another in robbery

A MAN was shot dead, one arrested and the other on the run after police quickly responded to an armed robbery at a shop in Popondetta, Northern, on Sunday.
People going to church watched as police exchanged fire with the three men who were trying to flee after robbing the shop in town.
Police commander Senior Inspector Ewai Segi said the three men were armed with homemade guns.
“The three walked into Fortune Trading in Popondetta town, and held up the staff at the cash register,” he said.
“They took mobile phones, cash and other items from the shop K4,587.70.
As they were leaving, police and members of a security firms blocked their escape route.
“The gang opened fire against police and security personnel.
“One of the men was shot, while the other two escaped.
“Police rushed the injured man to the Popondetta General Hospital (but) he died from the injuries he sustained.
“One ran into a family home and tried to hide there but was arrested by police.”
Segi said the third man, from Baroi village, Sohe, was on the run.
“We will be charging the second suspect once interview formalities have been completed,” he added.
