Cops to stand trial

TEN police officers accused of seriously injuring three senior Air Niugini officers in West New Britain have been committed to stand trial in the National Court, police prosecutor James Wafiuhambu said yesterday.
The Kimbe District Court on Wednesday found sufficient evidences to commit them to stand trial for severely assaulting and causing injuries to Kimbe Air Niugini retail sales manager Jacob Taule, Kimbe Air Niugini domestic ticketing officer Evodia Luvongit and Orion Security Service guard Roy Sozock in Kimbe on June 30 last year.
They assault took place after the policemen were told that they would not travel to Port Moresby to provide security for the Pacific Games.
They were also accused of unlawfully detaining Taule at the Kimbe police station cell.
The date of the trial is yet to be set.
It is alleged that on June 30 at about 5.30am, they were with another group of other 10 police officers from the province selected to attend the Games for security operations. However, the second group was allowed to travel to Port Moresby following WNBP police commander approval but these officer were not.
