POLICE in East New Britain police will arrest on the spot people driving vehicles which do not have number plates.
They are cracking down on the offenders because they are deliberately flouting the law.
Provincial police commander Supt Sylvester Kalaut said  yesterday the number plates must be clearly displayed at the front and back of each vehicle.
Police have recently noticed a number of vehicles without number plates using public roads. Kalaut said the drivers were deliberately breaking a simple rule.
“If vehicle owners think they can get away with it, then they should think again because we are stepping up our monitoring of vehicles on the roads,” he said.
He has directed officers from the police traffic section to be on the lookout for vehicles without number plates.
Kalaut said number plates identify the vehicle registration plate and made it easier for police officers to trace the
drivers, especially when they break any traffic rules.
Without number plates, it is difficult to trace the vehicles and drivers.
Last year, police received a lot of revenue from traffic infringement notices served on motorists driving defective vehicles.
Police also collect fees from firearm licences, character checks, crime and traffic accident reports.
