THE coronavirus outbreak in China has affected exchanges and trade cooperation between Papua New Guinea and China, according to a Chinese official.
The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in PNG director of political affairs Sun Jia responded to The National when asked whether the coronavirus outbreak had any impact on the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
He said China’s economy would get back on track.
“On the other hand, the PNG Government has tightened restrictions on entry, which has affected officials personnel exchanges and trade cooperation between China and PNG,” he said.
“Some employees from Chinese companies and the local Chinese community could not return to PNG in time, resulting in a shortage of staff and affecting the normal operation of their businesses.
“The import and export of goods have also been hindered, resulting in higher costs for companies.
“The Chinese side understands that PNG’s medical system is weak and its prevention and control capacity is poor,” he said.
“We hope that PNG will relax or even lift relevant restrictions as soon as possible in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organistaion.”
When asked about the influence of coronavirus on China’s economy, Jia said: “We should not worry about China’s economy.
“The outbreak did have some impact on China’s economy, especially on tourism, transportation, services and other sectors.”
But the impact was temporary and repairable.
“Once the epidemic is over, the pent-up consumer demand will be quickly be unleashed and help fuel a robust economic rebound.
“China occupies an important position in the global manufacturing industry chain.
He said other parts outside Hubei in China have resumed work.
