TWELVE teams have shown interest to compete in the Mt Golpu Mine-sponsored K10,000 Lae Corporate Eight-Ball Pool Challenge that is underway at Aviat Club.
According to the challenge organisers, six teams have confirmed their entry while others are yet to submit their application and pay the registration fee.
Support sponsors of the challenge are Bishop Brothers, Aviat Pokies, David and David Lawyers, Oracle Pacific and South Pacific Brewery Limited, with a total contribution — in cash and kind — of about K20,000 for prizes and administration costs.
Teams have been levied K1,000 of which K500 is for the team and the remainder for player registration.
Last year’s winners were Kuima Security with Classic Engineering being the runners-up.
Club president Karo Gamoga said the challenge had been running for the last five years which had been the major draw card for corporate companies to take part.
“This is the pinnacle tournament of the club, apart from the singles, doubles, and super fours tournaments,” he said.
“The challenge will run for three months.
“But a competition like this can not happen without sponsors.
“In the past, we had Trukai Industries, Guard Dog and NKW Group coming on board to support.
“This year, because of the Coronavirus pandemic, companies have understandably cut down on their sponsorship, so we’ve received negative answers from our traditional sponsors and we understand it.
“But at the same time, we have this home grown company, Mt Golpu Mine, through president and managing director John Nema, stepping in to sponsor which is very much appreciated.”
