Corruption is everywhere

Letters

A court in France has jailed former PM Francois Fillon for embezzling public funds.
It is a stark reminder that corruption happens in high places even in first world democracies where tough checks and balances are in place to ensure accountability and transparency.
Weaker democracies – with weak standards of accountability – are so much more prone to corruption.
It is a hard job to keep the bastards honest in today’s world of politics.
But it is up to the citizens to hold power to account.
