Costly car parts ripping motorists off
The National, Wednesday September 18th, 2013
CAN anyone responsible look into the sale of motor vehicle parts in PNG?
Most car parts outlets, generally foreign-owned, are ripping Papua New Guineans off with their high prices.
Is the Government doing anything to regulate and control the prices of car spare parts?
With so many used cars being imported into the country, car parts shops and wreckers are popping up like mushrooms all arpound the country.
The prices for the parts they import are extremely expensive, even “used or reconditioned” car parts.
I am sure their markups are three or four times more than normal and this is clearly profiteering.
I did a research on one car part called an "air flow sensor" for a Nissan Sunny X Saloon. Here are the prices I got from three auto part dealers.
One charged K1,375 the second one charged K945 and the third charged K870, all GST inclusive.
Those in the motor vehicle industry will know what an air flow sensor is. Such a small item cannot cost so much
The government must do something quickly to stop these unreasonable markups as soon as possible.
