Costly jobs and bogus contractors
The National, Friday March 28th, 2014
I DO not know if it can cost up to K4 million to put up a spike fence for a vocational institute, or that the maintenance of a standard classroom can even cost K1.2 million a year.
My goodness, who did the costing for such exorbitant amounts of money and how did the officers involved in quantifying and qualifying contractors with the RESI (education infrastructure) programme find their way into the system?
About 70% of the contractors are fake and bogus who have manipulated the contract documents and inflated invoices submitted for payments.
There are instances where a contractor has been awarded K500, 000 for supplying white goods.
And other contractors also had the similar type of payment for supplying white goods.
By now all teachers houses in the capital city should be fully maintained with white goods installed and look modern standard.
The Education Department must stop all outstanding payments to contractors and properly institute an audit into all work done including the installation of white goods.
