Council appoints Griffin as new vice-chancellor

PROF Frank Griffin has been appointed the new vice-chancellor of the University of Papua New Guinea.
University chancellor Robert Igara, when announcing Griffin’s appointment at a media conference at the Waigani campus in Port Moresby yesterday, described Griffin as a fit and proper person to lead the country’s premier university.
“The appointment of Professor Griffin was led, managed and resolved by the university council on Dec 18, 2018, following a transparent and public process consistent with the UPNG Act 1983,” Igara said.
He said the appointment was in accordance with the university rules and those of the Higher Education Act 2014 and approved by the National Executive Council following recommendation from Higher Education Minister Pila Ningi .
Cabinet has revoked all previous appointments of vice-chancellor, including the appointment of Professor Kenneth Sumbuk as acting.
Igara said Griffin was an eminently qualified person who had a PhD from the University of York in England and a Masters from the Australian National University in Canberra.
He did his post-graduate and Bachelor of Science at the University of Papua New Guinea.
“He also held management roles and responsibilities at the University of PNG, including executive dean of the School of Natural and Physical Science from 2009 to 2013.”
Griffin also served with the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme in Samoa as the director since 2013.
