PEOPLE from Namutka and Kadaulung villages outside Warangoi in Sinivit local level government (LLG), Pomio, East New Britain, are calling on their local MP and the provincial government to upgrade their road and build a bridge.
Kadaulung one ward member Eremas Boas told The National yesterday that nothing had been done to rebuild a bridge at Kadaulung river or upgrade a road that served Kadaulung one and two and Namutka.
“We have written letters to Pomio MP Elias Kapavore and the provincial government but the only reply we got was that they will look into our problem,” Boas said.
Boas said the bridge at Kadaulung, known as the didiman bridge, was built by a local contractor years ago and it collapsed in 2015.
“Our biggest concern is rebuilding the bridge as it now takes a long time to cross the river during the rainy season.”
He said this was a concern for people, especially women, who needed to attend the Warangoi Rural Hospital.
Boas said it was also dangerous for children and students..
He said the local communities did not have access to public motor vehicles (PMVs) as their road was in a bad state.
He said people had to walk for two hours to get to the main road to catch a PMV to Kokopo. He said it was difficult for pregnant women to walk the distance.
“We always walk more than two hours to reach the main junction at Warangoi to get on a PMV and also to go to the health centre for treatment other medical service ,” he said. Boas appealed to Pomio MP and Health and HIV/Aids Minister Elias Kapavore to address their concerns.
