Councillor calls on EC to revise electoral boundaries
The National, Tuesday February 9th, 2016
A WARD councillor in Huon Gulf wants the electoral boundaries in Morobe revised to include Miles in the Lae Open electorate.
Wampar Local Level Government Ward 9 councillor David Jacob said the Miles area despite being part of Huon Gulf had been deprived of services since it was under the Huon Gulf electorate.
He said the people affected live at 5-Mile, 6-Mile, 7-Mile, 8-Mile, 9- Mile, 10-Mile and 11-Mile.
“I have been a ward councillor for 21 years now but I do not see any government services delivered by the Huon Gulf district administration in the Miles area,” Jacob said.
“We get all of our services from Lae city so it is only logical to make us part of Lae Open.”
There are around 25,000 people in the area which is full of settlements but the people’s living standard had not improved.
“The only change we see is the four-lane Lae-Nadzab road,” Jacob said.
“Otherwise, we have been living like rejected people.”
He said the 2017 general election was getting closer and the Morobe Boundary Commission should revise the boundaries because the people had been deprived of services for many years.
“They should be enjoying water and electricity supplies as enjoyed by settlements in the city,” he said.
