A WARD councillor was arrested and charged with producing home brew and cultivating marijuana in a Chimbu village.
Ward 11 councillor Geregl Waine, from Mandaikama village in Sinasina-Yongumugl district, was arrested and charged by members of the Chimbu police operation “weeding grass” on Monday.
Chimbu police commander Supt Albert Beli confirmed that Waine was charged with possessing 200 grams of marijuana and home brew- making equipment.
He said Waine was remanded in police custody in Kundiawa awaiting police files to be completed.
He said members of the special operation responded to a tip-off from an informant.
Operation commander Detective Yatefa Welis said they were working with community leaders in Mandaikama and Ku area and that resulted in a notable reduction of marijuana cultivation and production of home brew (steam).
