Councillors take lead in Covid-19 awareness
A total of 121 ward councillors in Mul-Baiyer, Western Highlands, are prepared to help carry out awareness on Covid-19 in their community.
Ward councillors from the three local level government (LLGs) Mul, Baiyer and Lumusa attended a one-day training at Baiyer station conducted by Western Highlands health authority (WHPHA) officials in preparation for the awareness.
Deputy chief executive officer of Mul-Baiyer, Robert Rumba, said this was part of relaying information’s into the most remote areas.
He said people residing in remote communities were unaware of what was happening and how to avoid getting Covid-19.
Rumba said Mul-Baiyer ward councillors were taking the lead to carryout awareness.
He said many people were still living their normal lives unaware of what was happening globally.
“Awareness is the key to help people back in the remote areas to take warnings seriously,” he said.
“The 80 per cent of the population is back in the village so we have to use the ward councillors to reach out.”
Rumba said getting ward councillors into the campaign against Covid-19 would create more impact.
He called on councillors not to focus on money but to educate their people on simple basic health rules.
“We cannot prevent the virus with money. The very important area is to listen and follow instruction,” he said.
Rumba urged the councillors to educate communities to wash hands, practice social distancing and follow closely all health rules.
“We need to listen and follow instructions. We don’t need money but to follow what is being told to us,” he said.
