TRADE store owners at Malalaua in Gulf identified alleged bank robber William Nanua Kapris as one of the people who bought items from the shop.
Francis Milala and his wife, Grace, described Kapris at tall, slim, light brown-skinned and shaven, with looks that fitted someone from New Guinea (Mamose).
The couple was giving evidence during the Kerema robbery trial at the Bomana National Court outside Port Moresby last Friday.
Kapris and seven others, including the bank manager at the time Noah Karo, are facing charges of robbery, kidnapping for ransom and conspiracy among others. The amount involved more than K825,000.
Giving evidence for the prosecution, the Milalas said they witnessed the men buying items at the store.
“I stood about a metre away from them and watched as my wife served them,” Francis told Justice Joseph Yagi during the trial.
Francis was working as a Department of Primary Industry (DPI) officer at the Malalaua station at the time but resigned last year.
When asked if he could see the men in court, the Milalas pointed to Kapris as being one of them.
Francis told the court that when Kapris featured on Crime Stoppers programme on EMTV after the May 17, 2008 robbery date, he identified Kapris as one of the two who came to his
store.
“When I saw him (Kapris) being featured on Crime Stoppers on TV, I recognised him.”
When asked to describe the other person who had accompanied Kapris, he said the man had a beard and was stocky.
The trial is scheduled to continue today.
