Court delays drain resources

Letters

I AM concerned that opening times are not being followed, especially by court staff, including district court magistrates and police prosecutors.
If the courtroom is to open by 9.30am then it has to open at that time without delay.
I live in Mt Hagen and this is what I have experienced at the courthouse.
Several times we have seen the magistrates not turning up on time and because of that we run out of time and have cases postponed. In some cases the police prosecutors do not prepare the court documents on time.
Some of us spend money to hire lawyers, collect court documents and engage people from various fields to fight for justice.
To engage a lawyer from another province to come to Mt Hagen costs a lot of money and takes up resources.
I am calling on the chief magistrate to address this issue.
Some people travel from all over the Highlands to get to Mt Hagen and hope to return the same day but when the court staff are not on time, the hearings are postponed and that become a burden.
While the country is facing serious financial crises, we the small people are sacrificing to fight for justice through the courts.
This practise shouldn’t be going on as people who are in charge are professionals and should turn up on time and make sure judgement is made on time to save poor people having to use up all their savings just to have their day in court.
Please, court staff in Mt Hagen, turn up on time.
