A MAN was fined K400 yesterday by the Waigani District Court for breaching traffic rules and regulations.

Vincent Grei, 60, from Nara village, Kairuku, in Central, was found guilty of driving without due care and attention.

Magistrate Tracy Ganaii said the penalty for traffic offences was very light.

She expressed concern over the increase in traffic cases saying that the Government should consider increasing the penalty for traffic offences.

“Driving a vehicle around the city is not a laughing matter. But I have to abide by the law and hand down the stated penalties,” she said.

“Under the Motor Traffic Act, a person who drives a vehicle without due care and attention to people around him or her is guilty of an offence.”

Grei, who was under the influence of alcohol, drove onto the opposite lane when trying to manoeuver a sharp bend and hit a vehicle belonging to a Fiona Geno.
