A SENIOR constable attached to the Gordon minor crimes unit had his case adjourned for a month so he can make a submission after police serve him his files.
Snr Const Philip Otto, 50, from Taiadumo, Gembogl in Chimbu, was alleged to have abused his office by requesting the release of a suspect accused of stealing parts of a Toyota Camry.
Const Otto is second in command at the Gordon Police Station minor crimes unit.
It was alleged that on Jan 18, 2019 complainant Joe Kelly and Const Benjamin Dominic of Gordon Police Station arrested Norbet Yappa, suspected of stealing Kelly’s car parts.
Otto allegedly told the arresting officer that Yappa was his son in-law and wanted him to be released under his assurance that he would allow Yappa to spend time with his family over the weekend and escort him back on Monday (Jan 21).
Prior to Const Otto’s request, Const Dominic with a surety made an official entry in the police occurrence book reference indicating that the suspect would return on Monday.
The suspect never returned on the day assured by Const Otto. It was alleged that Otto aided Yappa’s escape when he requested for his release.
Const Dominic allegedly requested for Const Otto to return the suspect but to no avail.
Const Otto was arrested on Nov 13, charged with abuse of office and detained at the Boroko Police Station. The case returns on March 30 and his K300 bail was extended.
