Court grants bail to four accused of attempted murder
By GIDEON KINDIWA
Waigani Committal Court has granted a bail application filed by three men and a woman who were in custody charged with attempting to kill a man.
Their lawyer applied for bail.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar granted the application despite the prosecution’s objection.
The police prosecutor objected that the alleged crime was serious and the defendants should not be granted bail.
Bidar analysed their lawyer’s application and said that they still had the right to bail.
Kay Komine, 55, Komie Komine, 42, Junior Kay, 28, and Elisha Komine, 29, were alleged to have attacked Iviro John Kay with an intention to kill him by using hammers, bush knives, axes and iron bars.
There were also two others who were involved but were yet to be apprehended. The accused were all from Eastern Highlands.
Elisha was the victim’s ex-wife.
The incident allegedly happened on Dec 16 last year, at ATS settlemet, Port Moresby.
The victim went home from work and was sitting outside his gate when the perpetrators arrived in a taxi and attacked him.
He fell helpless on the ground and begged them to stop but they continued slashing him with bush knives and hitting him with iron bars.
The victim became unconscious and bleeding from his wounds while his attackers fled.
He was rushed to Port Moresby General Hospital and treated.
The matter was reported to police and the perpetrators were arrested on Jan 22 this year.
Bidar adjourned the case to Feb 12.
