Court to rule on disputed seat
The National, Thursday March 27th, 2014
THE National Court will hand down a ruling on the disputed Sumkar Open seat in Madang next month.
Former army commander Jerry Singirok (pictured) is challenging the win by Sumkar MP Ken Fairweather during the 2012 general election.
Judge David Cannings heard the final submissions in Waigani yesterday.
The ruling would be made in Madang on April 24.
The other respondents are election manager Emily Siamoli and the Electoral Commission.
Fairweather polled a total of 9,624 votes to beat Singirok, who managed to get 7,004 votes.
One of the allegations of bribery heard in court related to the presentation of a cheque for K15,000 cheque to the Matugar Fishing Group on May 21, 2012, by Fairweather.
One of the candidates, Rudolf Raward, was a member of the group who witnessed the event and became a key witness to support Singirok’s petition.
