Court wants translator in illegal entry case
A LAE District Court magistrate yesterday instructed to the police prosecutor and defence lawyer to seek a translator for the four Chinese nationals charged with breaching immigration laws.
Magistrate Edward Kupo told the lawyer and the prosecutor that the four needed to understand the language used to be able to defend their case properly.
The four Chinese from Fujian province were charged for allegedly entering the country illegally, without proper work permit or visa and original passports.
According to police, the four were picked up after a request was made by the Immigration and Citizenship Authority Office in Lae for police assistance to check employees at Sany Food Ltd at Talair Compound in Lae.
Li Yudong, Zhong Chen, Deming Fang and Lin Zifeng – were later charged and locked up for two days at Buimo jail.
During checks on general safety and regulations, it was found that the four had entered the country without valid passports, visa or work permits.
