THE opening of the new Buimo National Court House in Lae on Friday marked a significant step towards tackling a backlog of cases and convenience for key players in the court room.
Built at a cost of more than K500,000, the courthouse will specifically cater for remandees at Buimo Jail.
Some of these remandees have been waiting a long time to have their cases dealt with. Built by Hausman Building Solutions Ltd, the building is well equipped with modern facilities.
Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia spoke at the opening of the opening said this would now help the remandees speed up their cases.
“There is nowhere in the world where courthouse is built within the jail, it is only in PNG, and that is unique” he said.
The Buimo National Court House is the second to be built in the country, with Bomana being the first to be commissioned within the precincts of the prison.
Sir Salamo said the difference between the court house in Bomana and Buimo was that the Buimo one would be fully occupied through the week and cases would be heard daily by a judge who would be dedicated to the court.
