Mahuru village in Motu-Koitabu has set up a new kindergarten and preschool.

Cousins Agnes Tulapi, 50, and Pauline Roy, 28, started the Busy Bee Preschool and Kindergarten for early childhood education.

The school started classes three weeks ago. Head teacher Agnes Tulapi has 17 years of teaching experience.

Tulapi said she started the school because of the many problems in the communities.

“Our youths are involved in drugs and homebrew, and young girls as young as 10 years are going into prostitution,” she said.

“As a mother and member of the community, I want to try to address the issue through early child hood learning to stop the trend from continuing.

“From my experience as a teacher, I’ve learnt that early childhood is very important to the type of person our children will be in the future.” Tulapi said they charged K50 per child and looking for people in the community who want to work as volunteers at the school.
