Covec in Madang to upgrade, construct bridges
COVEC PNG Ltd bridge experts have arrived in Madang to construct six bridges along the Madang Ramu highway.
The bridges to be upgraded into double lane bridges are Tapo, Wasigo, Dry Wara, Bora, Waput and Gusap.
The Madang national works office said the bridge experts were camped at Waput in Usino and would start work on the bridges.
A team is expected to move to Yuriya River to fix the bridge that tilted to one side last Monday.
Madang Works branch manager Andrew Kendaura said some of the parts would be moved from Lae to Dumpu where the bridge was located.
He said a bypass was created for vehicles travelling between Madang, Morobe and the highlands to cross. Usino Bundi district administrator Steven Biko said the Madang Ramu highway especially the section in the Usino area were always in bad condition and consumed a lot of government funds.
Biko appealed to locals and travelling passengers to assist with the Covec team as they work on the six bridges.
