NATIONAL Capital District (NCD)/Central commander ACP Anthony Wagambie Jr says the ongoing Coronavirus (Covid-19) enforcement and awareness operations will continue with the support of the military police.
“The enforcement of the Covid-19 restrictions has sadly led to much confusion and rift between the police and communities,” he said.
ACP Wagambie told The National that the Covid-19 measures and restrictions were in place to protect families and those around us.
“Let us play our part in ensuring we practise safe Covid-19 measures at home and wherever we are,” he said, urging the public and those who have the knowledge on the Covid-19 impact on people to help conduct awareness to help the ignorant.
“We have also learnt much from the first experience in 2020 during the State of Emergency, when pandemic restrictions were rushed, leaving police to enforce.
“This led to so much confusion and created a rift between police and communities.
“For NCD’s operations, we have deployed a team to work alongside NCDC, the military and Road Transport Authority.
“Popular public places of gathering, such as Manu Autoport Market, Rainbow shop front, Gerehu Market and others around the city have been cleared and tents set up for security. The rest of police manpower will function on business as usual.
“Crime-prevention does not stop.
“With the Covid-19 effects on the economy, we have seen a marginal increase in crime.
ACP Wagambie said the metropolitan police were committed to support the efforts of the controller and provincial controllers.
