CRICKET Papua New Guinea (CPNG) is determined to host the country’s premier 50-over competition this year once the Government gives the all-clear over the coronavirus pandemic, says an official.
CPNG general manager Lee McDowell told The National yesterday that the Isuzu National Cup was an important component of the governing body’s calendar.
McDowell said the launch of the Boroko Motors-sponsored competition was scheduled for March but the event had been delayed in response to the pandemic.
“The Isuzu National Cup will definitely be running later this year,” he said.
“It has the full support of Boroko Motors as we await the Government’s decision on lifting the sports recess and other restrictions in relation to the Covid-19 crisis.
“As soon as we get an indication of when we can proceed, we will conduct the launch and release the updated calendar.”
He said national coach and high performance manager Joe Dawes was responsible for the programme.
McDowell said CPNG’s focus at the moment was to keep its players and staff safe and adhere to government advice during the nationwide state of emergency.
“At this point in time we must respect the Government’s orders,” he said.
“If we all comply and follow social distancing protocols, hopefully the situation will change quickly and society can go back to normal.
“We know sports will play a big part in bringing communities together again, raising spirits and providing entertainment when the pandemic is over.”
