“The police crackdown was launched following a spike in petty crimes by youths and those in neighbouring villages and settlements,” he said.
“Those charged are aged between 13 and late 20s.”
Data showed the following crimes committed by the youths:

  • LOITERING in public places with intend to commit crime;
  • DRINKING (alcohol) in public places;
  • UNLAWFUL wounding of victims by pick pockets;
  • DRUNK and disorderly behaviour in public;
  • POSSESSION of offensive weapons such as sharpened screw drivers, pocket knives, daggers etc; and,
  • SMOKING and possession of marijuana.

A small team of police and prison wardens jointly conducted the random stop and search that was proven successful,” Chief Insp Nebanat said, adding that more of such crime-prevention operations would be conducted to check petty crimes.
“We are all working together to consolidate the confidence of businessmen and the public.”

  • Very good, but it has to be consistent all the time, not only once & then its not done for a whole month. There should be community police on the patrol within the town centers everyday to keep an eye out for people who commit those minor crimes to people.

    Here in Alotau, it also has to be conducted because most of those young men, go around carrying sharp objects in their pockets. Also, the police should not be allowed to let their friends or relatives go free, the police men must respect the law & the uniform they are wearing.

    Some police men abuse the law by doing things like that.

    • For once Police have got this one right. We start from petty crimes and get rid of them. This will show that there is no general lawlessness. People will begin to see that there is law and order and will abide by the laws of this country. Petty crimes should always be priority and not road blocks as is the current trend.

      Good on you
