Crackdown on bogus insurance claims
The National, Friday February 12th, 2016
MOTOR Vehicle Insurance Ltd is clamping down on fraudulent insurance claims being lodged around the country.
A first lot of suspect claims were handed to police for investigation on Wednesday.
Chief executive officer Joe Wemin, who handed a number of third-party motor vehicle accident insurance claims lodged at the Central Province Transport Authority to ACP Central and NCD, Sylvester Kalaut, said some people collaborated to defraud MVIL and the State.
“And so our efforts in the last three years were to address the matter.
“But of course, this is an underground activity where you do not have enough evidence to convince any authority that you have that information.
“It was really a huge task and a great challenge for MVIL to actually get into details to see how all these things are done.
“We are certain that some citizens out there are colluding with certain individuals to lodge false claims,” Wemin said.
“We also know of people in authority that are assisting in lodging false insurance accidents claims.
He said they were confident to tackle the matter with the support of stakeholders involved in the claims process.
“We are confident and we will address it head on.
“We have done our homework and we went through certain parts of the country and collected files for evidence.
Wemin said MVIL would be moving into the Highlands soon because of the high number of claims lodged from there.
“We have information, we are starting with Central and we will be moving up to the Highlands and the perpetrators will be dealt with according to the law,” Wemin said.
