A CRAFT market was held at the Laguna Hotel in Port Moresby last weekend to showcase and sell PNG handicraft to tourists.
The craft market is held four times a month. The first week is hosted by the Laguna Hotel, the second week at the Port Moresby Arts Theatre, third week at Holiday Inn and the fourth week at the IEA College of Tafe.
Laguna Hotel sales rep Emmanuel Ola said it was a way of promoting PNG’s culture to people who stayed at the hotel and help the local craft makers earn an income.
Ola said no fee was charged for the venue.
“All they do is come to the front counter and let us know they want to sell their handicraft and we direct them to the right place to set up their stalls,” he said.
The craft market began at 10am last Saturday and ended at 5pm.
Some of the crafts sold at the market includes women’s jewellery made from traditional materials, bilum, tapa cloth, cane baskets, carvings, lime, organic homemade body products and paintings of traditional PNG.
Vendor Regina Kaulo from Chimbu said she was grateful for such opportunities to sell her products quickly to tourists.
