Cricket back at UPNG

UNIVERSITY of Papua New Guinea Vice- Chancellor Professor Mange Matui, is pleased students will have the chance to play cricket, a sport that instils discipline and respect.
“Cricket is a great game,” Matui said.
“It’s a game of skill with bat and ball, as well as fielding. It fosters discipline and respect among players.
“We need students to develop that attitude.
“There have been no organised games at UPNG for at least seven or eight years because we get no funding from the government to develop sport.
“Sadly, the other reason that I discovered when I arrived at UPNG in 2012 is that ‘someone’ borrowed the bats and pads and wickets and they never came back. I guess you would call that theft where I come from,” he said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to team up with the best run sport in the country and to help them develop cricket talent on a first class field which has an international facility.
“We sincerely thank the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby for their trust in us and selecting UPNG as the site of the first two pitches, All of the stakeholders who support cricket PNG will be beneficiaries of the facility.”
