CRICKET PNG yesterday announced the launching of a new cricketing event, the Dulux Central Women’s Cup.
The new and exciting cricket challenge started yesterday in Keapara village, Central Province. It will end with the finals on March 20.
Invitations were sent out to 30 villages in Central province to compete in the inaugural event and 20 villages have confirmed their participation.
The women from these villages will be battling for the inaugural crown.
The tournament is divided into three stages – division champions, semi-finals and grand finals.
The competition will consist of eight players in a team with 10 overs.
Cricket PNG general manager Billy Leane said the villages competing were divided into eight divisions depending on their geographical location.
He said each division would play each other in that division to determine the champion village.
“All champions in the eight divisions will progress to the semi-finals, where all the eight are divided into two groups of four.
“The two best villages will then advance to the Dulux Central Women’s Cup grand finals on March 20,” Leane said.
Dulux national sales manager Dough Bell, at the sponsorship announcement yesterday, said that it was for the first time Cricket PNG had held a women’s competition in Central province.
Bell said they were glad to support cricket.
He added that Dulux would be donating paints and various sporting equipment to the villages competing and awards to each division, with player of each division receiving a set of gardening tools and champion team will receive a cheque for K2,000.
The villages who will be participating are, Keapara, Alukuni, Karawa, Hula, Irupara, Alewai, Babaka, Makerupu, Kamali, Kalo, Kaparoko, Kemabolo, Gabagaba, Tubuseria, Barakau, Gwarumemase, Fisherman Island, Kila Police Baracks, Gomore, Kemaea, Kwalimurubu, Lalaura, Kapari, Viriolo, Gavuone, Egalauna, Maopa, Pelagai and Paramana.
