CRICKET PNG will be joining in on the World AIDS Day celebrations throughout PNG, running coaching clinics and competitions showing the sport too can be used as a tool to spread important social messages.
Cricket PNG’s development staff will be joining the celebrations in National Capital District, Milne Bay, Goroka and Madang.
Keeping in line with this year’s HIV theme, the cricket development teams will be going out to villages and settlements to run clinics and competitions.
In NCD, Cricket PNG will be in the North-east and the North-west electorates to mark the celebrations at ATS and Kone Tigers oval respectively.
“We would like to invite the children in the North-east and North-west electorates to come and participate in our clinics,” Cricket PNG education and training manager Lakani Oala said.
“They can come have fun playing cricket and also receive the HIV awareness messages.”
In Goroka, the CPNG team will be joining the National Sports Institute’s zero HIV in PNG celebrations.
Tom Humphries and Rupert Warigi will be holding a clinic and game at the NSI grounds.
“We are looking forward to teaching the youth about HIV and cricket” Warigi said.
In Madang, Ben Ryan is conducting a clinic in conjunction with the provincial AIDS Council Secretariat for the children in Guvstor village.
The clinic will be held at Divine World University in the afternoon.
“I encourage anyone in the area to come and join the clinic no matter what age, sex or ability,” Ryan said.
Unfortunately for David Morey and Simon Dewillie in Milne Bay, the planned Alotau Inter-school competition on World AIDS Day had to be cancelled due to schools pulling out.
Rather with the help of the provincial HIV Council, Morey and Dewillie are planning an extended coaching clinic and HIV education course at Alotau Primary School.
“We hope we can spread the message and make a difference to these children,” Dewillie said.
