THE nation’s best young cricketers have converged in Port Moresby to ramp up selections for the Under-19 Men’s World Cup in the West Indies in January.
The top-48 cricketers have been picked from around the country, including Morobe, Northern, Milne Bay, Central and the nation’s capital through Cricket Papua New Guinea’s game development programme.
The young men will go through a week-long camp to test their skills and abilities.
Only 18 exceptional cricketers (15 travelling and three non-travelling reserves) will be chosen at the end of the camp to compete in the World Cup.
All 18 players will be vaccinated and documents prepared for international travel as part of the camp.
Northern’s Easterdon Bereda is one of the selected players in camp.
He took up the sport through the Bank South Pacific Financial Group Limited School Kriket programme and is now heading to Port Moresby to try out for the junior national team.
“It’s my dream to play cricket,” Bereda said.
“When I knew I was coming to Port Moresby, I was excited.”
Another young cricketer, Malcolm Aporo, from Hula village’s Raukele cricket club in Central, has been playing the sport for five years now.
