THE Capital Rugby Union (CRU) will be hosting its Invitational Rugby 7s tournament at the Bava Park in Port Moresby this weekend.
CRU competition manager Paul Joseph said this was the fourth edition of the tournament and they would have teams from Gulf, Western and the National Capital District.
Featuring in the tournament are the men’s, women’s and Under-18 boys’ divisions.
“Unfortunately, we won’t be having the U18 girls’ division but we are planning to have them participate in the Sports Tok Sevens later on during the Easter weekend next month,” Joseph said.
“The visiting teams from outside the CRU competition have teams in men’s and U18 boys’ divisions. They are Moripi and Lakekamu (Gulf), Fly Eagles (Daru), and Ace Tigers, Barbarians and Gerehu Natives from NCD.
“The women’s division will have eight teams. The men’s division will have 18 teams and the U18 category will have 12 sides.”
The winners in the men’s division will pocket K15,000.
The winners in the women’s division will score K10,000 while the U18 victors will receive a trophy.
The tournament sponsors are Pacific Industries, Rhodes, SP Brewery, Total Waste Management, Gangloff Consulting, Keynote, Blue Planet Logistics and SBS Electrical.
Joseph said with the PNG Palais gearing up for the Hongkong Sevens next month, the tournament would be used as a lead-up for the team.
