STAFF from the Baisu jail in Western Highlands joined the rest of the PNG Correctional Services in the country to remember colleagues who lost their lives while on duty.
Catholic priest Fr Robert Nolie said the 19th Remembrance Day was a special day dedicated to men and women who served in Correctional Services.
He commended them for their contribution to the country’s law and justice sector, particularly in rehabilitating prisoners.
Fr Robert noted that officers had lost their lives during the Bougainville crisis while others had passed while on normal duty.
He said the Correctional Services was an arm of the disciplined forces and those that had given their lives for the service needed to be acknowledged and remembered.
Acting Baisu prison commander Insp Titus Watipa said some of their colleagues had died in road accidents while others had been killed in confrontations with criminals.
The families of these officers, who had struggled after their deaths, thanked them for their sacrifice.
Speaking during a dawn service in Port Moresby on Monday, Correctional Services Commissioner Stephen Pokanis urged his officers to be committed in their service.
