CS not to disclose Yasause’s detention

THE public will not be given any information regarding the detention of the alleged murderer Dr Theo Yasause, deputy Correctional Services (CS) Commissioner (operations) Henry Wavik said.
Wavik told The National yesterday that because of security reasons, CS would not disclose details as to where and how Yasause is being detained at the Bomana prison facility.
“Because of security reasons, I will not give any information to the media or any other persons regarding the detention of Yasause,” Wavik said.
“When the appropriate time comes, we will let you (public) know about Yasause and his detention status,” he added.
When asked whether Yasause would be accorded special treatment, given his status as a prominent public figure, Wavik said it was not for the media to know because of CS protocols.
However, it is understood that high profile people who commit or charged with crimes would not be sharing jail with common criminals because of fear that they may be subjected to undue threats, intimidations, and harassments by other inmates because of their status as elites.
Wavik also did not mention whether Yasause will be allowed to talk to a lawyer or family members while he was waiting  for his next court appearance.
Yasause was charged with wilful murder of Akuila Emil on Monday afternoon by NCD detectives and appeared for a brief mention on Tuesday morning before magistrate Rosi Johnson at the Waigani committal court.
Johnson ordered that the  case be adjourned to March 8 for further hearing.
The National understands that the adjournment will allow Yasause to make bail applications at the National Court pending his next appearance and, at the same time, giving Yasause’s lawyer and police prosecutors time to prepare their files.
