A CORRECTIONAL Services officer at Beon prison in Madang claims that he was attacked by a family member at the town bus stop but was saved by police on patrol.
Augustine Laho, 33, of Vanimo Green, West Sepik, said he was on his way to leave his daughter at the bus stop when he was allegedly attacked by his brother-in-law.
He said he had an argument with his wife who reported it to her brothers.
A police team on patrol in town noticed the scuffle and stopped it.
They arrested the brother-in-law and took Laho to the hospital.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said reports of stabbing had been increasing recently.
He said the man was lucky to be saved by the police officers.
“I want to thank the officers for the quick response that saved the life of the Correctional Services officer,” he said.
“I also want to warn those carrying weapons and walking around town to be careful because police will not hesitate to arrest them.”
Supt Rubiang said the brother-in-law was later released from police custody because he wanted the matter to be sorted out of court by the family.
