A CORRECTIONAL Services officer has been suspended as an investigation is underway to find out how 17 men cut through a fence to escape from Bomana Prison on Thursday.
One was recaptured on the same day and Commissioner Stephen Pokanis said the search was continuing for the 16 on the run.
There will be a separate independent investigation starting today on the breakout from the country’s largest prison between noon and 1pm on Thursday.
Comm Pokanis said the priority was recapturing the 16 – including one on death row, one on life sentence, one convicted inmate and 13 on remand.
“I am really not concerned about our administrative issues because they are manageable,” Pokanis said.
“All I am focusing on is to find the prisoners and bring them in, with support from police, the communities and immediate families.”
The recaptured prisoner was convicted killer Saku Dove who was caught at Sabusa in Central by the Port Moresby-based police.
Minister for Correctional Services Win Dakri Daki has urged the 16 on the run to give themselves in at the nearest police station.
