SHOWING no remorse whatsoever and keeping eye contact with the judge, Steven Tari, dubbed Black Jesus, told the court during his sentence submission hearing on Tuesday that if he was incarcerated, “there would be third world war”.
A shocked and surprised courtroom listened as Steven took the stand on Justice David Cannings’ invitation to see if he had anything to say in response to his crimes, Tari impressed everyone with the bold statement.
A shocked Cannings said that he did not know what the remark meant but asked if that was a threat aimed at him.
His lawyer, Anne Raymond from the state solicitors’ office, had to seek leave to speak to her client.
After a four-year trial, Tari has been found guilty of four counts of aggravated rape.
Raymond, in her submission, stated that her client was a first time offender, that there was no use of physical force on the victims with no injuries sustained, that there was no use of weapons and that the people – in their own customary belief had long held God Yali in awe – thus Tari was only capitalising on their ignorance.
She stated that the starting point of 15 years in respect of each of the counts and the circumstances of the offence called for a cumulative sentence.
She added because of the multiplicity of the offence, the court apply the totality principle and impose a sentence that would not be crushing on her client.
The court hearing for a decision on his fate would  be held next week.
