Cultural commission gets new acting executive director

STEVEN Kilanda is the new acting executive director for the National Cultural Commission (NCC).
Kilanda took office last Thursday, replacing John Uani, who returns to his substantive position as director festivals.
NCC is one of the oldest institutions of the country, established by an Act of Parliament to protect, preserve and promote the cultures and arts of indigenous Papua New Guineans.
National Cultural Commission is made up of four divisions – the executive management, policy planning and research festival marketing and cultural extension.
It also has under its wings the Institute of PNG Studies, the National Film Institute and the National Performing Arts Troupe.
Kilanda’s appointment follows a recommendation by the Minister for Tourism Arts and Culture Emil Tammur to Public Service Minister Elias Kapavore. Prior to his appointment, Kilanda worked at the National Museum and Arts Gallery, where he served as the corporate finance manager.
The National Museum and Arts Gallery is one of the three agencies that come under the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture.
The other is the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority.
In a brief hand-over ceremony yesterday, Kilanda stressed the important role of the organisation and called on staff to support and cooperate with him to bring in positive changes.
“We need to work closely together,” he said.
“Let’s correct ourselves and get basic things right first before we can attempt to make big changes. I, therefore, appeal for all your support.”
Uani congratulated Kilanda and welcomed him to the commission.
