THE Agmark Sepik Nines Cup arrived in Wewak in style yesterday as more teams continued to register for the six remaining spots.
Sepik Pride project manager Bradley Simon said 12 teams had secured spots for the tournament which kicks off at Pora Oval in a few weeks’ time.
He said they only had six remaining spaces for interested teams before the close of registration later this month.
Former Rabaul Guria Simon said East Sepik was fielding four teams, two each from Maprik and Wewak.
“Port Moresby is also sending four teams, other centres are also sending sides to participate in the tournament,” he said.
Simon said Digicel Cup referees and Papua New Guinea Kumuls coach Michael Marum would visit the province to run a two-day clinic before the tournament kicked off on Dec 4.
He thanked the Gurias for backing the tournament with trophies and a cheque for K30,000.
“We have always been travelling out to play or be a part of rugby league,” Simon said.
“But now, we (Sepiks) are hosting a tournament and everyone is looking forward to it.
“Work on the Pora Oval is scheduled for completion a day before the tournament kicks off.
“We have lodges and guest houses to host the visiting teams, we can also arrange for schools to assist with accommodation for them.”
Simon urged the people of East Sepik to be hospitable towards the visiting teams when they arrive in Wewak next month.
Meanwhile, two women’s teams are expected to play in the tournament’s curtain-raiser.
