THE National Capital District Governor’s Cup kicked off its playoffs at the Kaugere Oval yesterday with the annual rugby league tournament’s top-eight sides battling for berths in today’s semifinals.
Tournament organisers said yesterday that a change in the finals format saw the top-two teams from the four pools progress with winners going straight into the semifinals followed by the Cup final.
In the opener of the quarterfinals, QPR Colts progress through to the semifinals following their 8-0 win over the D8 Mosquitoes and Gerehu United kicked a field goal to edge ID24 10-9.
Dei Hunters produced one of the performances of the playoffs with a 26-0 thumping of the Taurama Vikings in the third quarterfinal.
The final match saw a stalemate (12-12) between Konedobu’s Border Storm and the 9-Mile Dwarves after it was called off following a dispute. A winner is yet to be determined.
Tournament director Simon Nuabo said despite differences, teams and their supporters behaved well over the past five days.
“This year, the supporters are incredible,” he said.
“The teams have come well prepared for this tournament and it has shown on the field. Some matches had gone down to the wire. We can see the interest and we hope to see more of this in the future.”
