Customs facing challenges
The National, Friday July 25th, 2014
CUSTOMS PNG Commissioner Ray Paul says despite progress by the agency, there are still challenges that need to be addressed.
He was speaking during the opening of the Customs business consultative forum in Lae yesterday, themed ‘Communication-Sharing information for a better corporation’, which was attended by representatives from the private sector.
Paul said that 26 years operation had seen revolving and changing systems to address the daily challenges experienced in all areas including training and awareness.
“The important part of this conference is that we tell you what we are doing and you tell us
what you are doing and need,” he said.
“If you are not happy with customs this is the time to talk openly, the main idea is that we can talk to you.
“Our level of implementation is around 60% and is still improving.”
Paul said Customs PNG, as a member of the World Customs Organisation, was trying its best to improve in line with the principles of the international body in doing business across borders.
Under those principles, Paul said business procurements and procedures to do with tariffs are practiced the same and the customs to customs network is working well.
“The good thing is that we are protecting our borders well,” he said.
“If we strengthen this organisation and get your partnership and understanding we won’t have much hiccup,” Paul said
