Customs impound ‘smuggled’ containers

CUSTOMS has impounded 13 containers of goods imported from China deemed to have been smuggled into PNG.
Substantial amounts of duty could have been avoided without Customs intervention.
“Fraudulent documents had been prepared and more than K200,000 in duty could have been evaded had the goods been removed,” Customs commissioner Gary Juffa informed yesterday.
The containers were imported on Oct 10 but were detected by customs intelligence which prevented them leaving the Port Moresby wharves.
The goods were building materials and it was understood that they had been imported from China and were the subject of a Customs fraud investigation.
