A CHINESE national and a shipowner were fined K5,000 each for trading pornographic materials and other illicit items in Fairfax waterfront in Port Moresby.
Yu (Pochnyu) Anping, 45, from Zhejiang province, China, was nabbed at 6am yesterday by Customs officers on preventive duties.
Yu was trying to trade off pornographic CDs and DVDs to the crew of a ship.
Yu is a crew member of a Taiwan registered ship leased by a fishing company.
PNG Customs Services (PNGCS) told The National that Yu and the shipowner were fined for being in possession of prohibited items and for illegally trying to trade illicit items under the Customs Act 1951.
The ship will be detained until the K10,000 fine is settled with PNGCS.
Southern region border security director Bejamine Sine warned all shipping agents to notify international vessels coming and leaving PNG waters to respect and abide by PNG Customs laws and its regulations.
“Possessing and trading of pornographic and/or any other illicit items for commercial or personal use is illegal and those found to have breached Customs laws will be punished accordingly.
“It is the duty of the shipping agents to educate ship crews coming from overseas to adhere and abide our laws and regulations” Mr Sine said.
Customs Commissioner Gary Juffa said pornographic materials and illicit drugs were corrupting the minds and influencing the young generation of PNG, resulting in a sharp increase in sexual crimes.
“Pornography and illicit drugs are slowly eating away the fabric of our society,” Mr Juffa said.
