ONE of Fiji’s top cyclists, Christian Carling, (nearest camera) is in Port Moresby to defend his Pacific Time Trial title at the Pacific Cycling Championships this weekend.

Carling was part of the gold medal winning time trial team at the championships in Suva, Fiji, last year.

“I’m looking forward to competing in Port Moresby. I know the competition will be tough and it won’t be easy taking on the PNG cyclists on their home turf,” he said.

Cycling Fiji has been training for the Pacific Cycling Championships for three months.

Their president, Dom Sansom, said they were well prepared.

“We have a dedicated team and a very committed coach in Andrew Pene,” Sansom said.

“He has worked tirelessly to have the team in top condition. We would like to thank Lamana Hotel, Port Moresby, for their generous contribution to the team.

“It is great to have a PNG partner on board. And we wouldn’t be here without sponsorship from Marco Polo in Suva, the French Embassy in Fiji and the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre.

“We are looking forward to the challenge of racing against cyclists from PNG and Guam.”

The Pacific Cycling Championships will be on Saturday, with a criterium (short lap road race) and an individual time trial on Sunday.

Cycling Fiji squad members are: Andrew Pene, Christian Carling, Lui Pene, Petero Manoa, Toma Pene, Wah Sing, Lavinia Dickson and Seini Adivuti.
