MORE than 600 cyclists will vie for K40,000 worth of trophies and prizes when the inaugural Rosso Cup begins at the National Botanic Garden in Lae, Morobe, tomorrow.
Organising committee chairman Ian Ellery said preparations were progressing well.
“It’s a challenge to host a premier event in Lae amid these challenging times due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said. Ellery thanked major sponsor Niugini Electrical for supporting the event.
He also acknowledged the Lae City Authority, under chief executive Neil Ellery, for taking the lead in organising the event.
“The authority is promoting a lot of positive activities to change the attitude of people so that we can all take ownership and contribute to the development of Papua New Guinea’s second largest city.
“It’s all about creating growth, opportunities and development.”
Lae MP John Rosso said the city, once a peaceful place for everyone, had deteriorated over the years.
“Hence, the race was initiated because we want Lae to be a safe place again, bringing families together to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and working to make a better city,” he said.
The race — which starts at 10.30am — will involve children and adults, with the seniors to take on a longer, tougher track.
The event will also see the wheelchair and corporate team races.
Tickets, which are K10 for adults and K5 for children, are on sale at the city authority.
