WINGER and try-scoring sensation Douglas Pirika says Central Dabaris are looking forward to a tough clash with fifth-placed Enga Mioks in round six of Digicel Cup in Wabag on Sunday.
He scored his first Digicel Cup hat-trick to help the Dabaris to a 30-20 victory against Mt Hagen Eagles last weekend. Pirika has so far scored eight tries since round one.
The 22-year-old was recruited by Dabaris from the Southern Super League National Gaming Control Board Cup after a solid season with Laumas last year. Pirika made his debut against Lae Tigers in round one.
The Central and Gulf native said his goal this year was to help the Dabaris reach the finals.
“Since 2019, the Dabaris haven’t reached the finals, so my aim is to help the team make the top-six,” Pirika told The National.
Meanwhile, he said the Digicel Cup was tough as all 12 teams had high-quality players. But Pirika said he was taking it one game at a time. “This is my first season in the inter-city competition,” he said.
“It’s challenging as we’re playing against experienced players each week. I’ve adjusted my game to meet the standard of the competition. It’s the beginning of my career, so I’m making use of every opportunity.”
