IT is a milestone achievement for the family and the child, when he earns the privilege to attend a higher learning institution.
But this was not the case for me.
My son, a Natschol student in the school of business, was prevented from continuing his third year under unknown circumstances, although scoring a 2.75 GPA, which should automatically place him in the eligibility of HECAS through the OHE this 2012 academic year (the minimum GPA required for HECAS is 2.25).
I am particularly disappointed and irritated with the selection criteria for continuing students and submission of names to OHE for the award.
This is not our first disappointing experience.
In 2009, upon successful completion of his Grade 12 with notable grades of A’s and B’s, my son was accepted at UPNG, but without Natschol.
It was also noted that a certain schoolmate of his received the award, despite lower grades.
We lodged complaints with OHE and UPNG demanding an explanation, but nothing was done.
It was a sad saga for most struggling students and parents alike.
Certainly, injustice cannot be done twice to the same student, and I express my disgust and disappointment so that a remedial action can be taken immediately to weed out and eradicate such unfair practices.
As concerned parents and guardians, we are calling for nothing less than transparency and sincere professionalism to be upheld in these learning institutions, and without prejudice.
