CAMILLUS Daguma is the new Kerowagi MP, breaking a curse that his people of Kunabau in Chimbu’s Kerowagi district believe has haunted them since Independence.
Educated elites from Kunabau had, over the years, contested provincial and open seats but never won.
The people say there is a curse in the area because every time someone from Sambugla, Waugla and Kombuku stood for the national election, they always finished second or third.
Prominent people and businessmen from the area stopped contesting the elections because of the “curse”.
So, Sunday night was a bit of an historical moment for the Kunabau people when Daguma, standing as a Triumph Heritage Empowerment (T.H.E) Party candidate, was declared the winner.
He polled 8,809 votes to beat MP Guma Wau on 8,466 votes.
The people of Kunabau lived in an area stretching from the border of Koronigle Bridge to Nend, bordering Kundiawa-Gembogl district.
Last Sunday, they did not sleep as they began the celebrations.
Yesterday morning, the people travelled in truckloads to Gerekurba, Daguma’s village, to congratulate Daguma.
